Hello and welcome!
You’ve heard of a cat cafe, right? They’re all the rage, and rightly so! Way too many cats need homes, so these cafes that also house adorable adoptables that are popping up all over America – and the world – are a very good thing.
Well, My Cat Jeoffry is a slightly different variation on that theme. We are a nonprofit “cat bookstore,” specializing in books for animal lovers – that’s all animal lovers, not just cat fanatics Our mission is to get homeless animals adopted in an atmosphere that is more comfortable and home-like than a regular shelter, as well as to promote compassion toward and empathy for animals through literature. We want to be a meeting place where the community can learn about and celebrate animals. We seek to improve literacy and compassion through reading and writing by hosting therapy sessions where patrons can practice reading to an animal, and writing programs where young people can write a story about a favorite animal to be included in a published book. More on that last project, which we are really excited about, soon! We currently are online only but plan to open in brick and mortar form after the pandemic is over. We will likely open in Phoenix, AZ. We will partner with a rescue to house wonderful felines up for adoption. So you will be able to browse books and play with the cats! Since we are a nonprofit all proceeds go back to the animals.
We are currently selling print books through our Bookshop store, audiobooks via our Libro.fm account, and eBooks via our My Must Reads store. All proceeds from sales in all three stores support our humane education and cat adoption missions since this is a nonprofit! We truly hope that you will support our mission and our bookstore and cat adoption center by purchasing your books through the above links. Thank you so much!
On this website, you can find our book blog. We review all kinds of books featuring all kinds of animals – from educational nonfiction and literary memoirs to cozy mysteries and romance novels where animals bring their humans together. Just search under the category you are interested in to find a listing of those genres on our blog. And, to find a companion animal for adoption, please click on the “Adoptable Cats” tab up top. Since we’re not open yet, we are currently linking to rescues.
As for our name, as an English major back in college, our founder, TJ, a writer, fell in love with Christopher Smart’s ode to his cat, Jeoffry, from his poem Jubilate Agno. Smart was a well-known figure in 18th Century London and, wonderfully, one of his nicknames was Kitty Smart!
The poem describes so many cats we’ve known to a tee, and to us, the poem says that animals reflect divine beauty in the world just by being their natural selves. We thought a piece of literature so masterfully celebrating the awesomeness of cats would be ideal for a “cat bookstore.”
Thank you so much for stopping by. Please join our newsletter and we will keep you updated on new books we have in the online store, on any virtual events we may have, and on our plans to open physically!
